The Restaurant
"Good food, comfortable drink" is the mission, but at Alice's, it's about much more than that. With a broad deck that overlooks the main stretch of Lake Hopatcong, fresh produce from nearby Halsey Island, and a naturally simple (but rustic) décor, Alice's is a place that celebrates lake living and good company.
Lake Hopatcong residents Alice and Béla Szigethy opened Alice's in June 2009 to expand the selection of lake destinations. "We love the lake, and want to never have to leave," says Alice. The Szigethys, who also own the Main Lake Market on Prospect Point, renovated the building, which had been a series of eateries over several decades. They also built new docks for boat parking, just south of the Windlass Restaurant, near a lot that will soon be a lakefront miniature golf course.
Their reinvention features vaulted ceilings, reclaimed-barn-wood walls, comfy booths, and a full bar that extends from the airy interior to the breezy deck. A mahogany seating bar runs the length of the deck so guests can sit and enjoy a clear panorama of the water, and an austere metal awning gives outdoor diners a shady place to enjoy the view, the breeze—and, of course, the food.
The fare has evolved into a mix of healthy dishes and comfort food, with a regular selection of innovative specials. A mainstay of the menu is produce picked fresh from just a few hundred yards away on the Szigethys' Halsey Island farm: tomatoes, corn, and other items are literally taken off the boat every day to be freshly prepared.
Executive Chef and General Manager Gavin Citron, who is celebrated for his ability to bring simple sophistication to any cuisine, comes to Alice's after years of working in the New York City restaurant scene. Chef Christopher Chesbro comes to the restaurant from Calandra's Italian Village in Caldwell. And altogether, the team has created Alice's: a place where couples, families, and friends can dock (or drive) and be a few steps away from an exquisite meal in a charming and casual setting, seven days a week.
Big Fish Lounge
With low lighting, walls upholstered with leather and natural beadboard, weathered mirrors, leather seating, and a marble bar, the Big Fish Lounge has the feel of going below deck in a luxury yacht. A swanky-but-comfortable counterpoint to the casual scene upstairs, the lounge is a place to relax, to tell stories, and to enjoy a drink and good company.
In addition to being another destination for those seeking a classy night out, the lounge is a nod to the history of Nolan's Point, where train passengers once disembarked to enjoy Lake Hopatcong's resort community in the early twentieth century. The space, with its rich elegance and its view of the water, aims to evoke that era of the lake's history, with a modern bar menu.
Together, Alice’s and the Big Fish Lounge provide the best of both worlds, bringing lake residents and visitors a casual but sophisticated destination for brunch, lunch, dinner, and late-night dining. Both spaces are also available for private parties and functions.
