Il Monello brings expert technique and impeccable service to the authentic cuisine of the Abuzzo region of Italy. Nestled along the Adriatic coast, Abruzzo is one of Italy’s most beautiful and fertile regions. Abruzzese cooks are known for turning fresh, simple ingredients into sumptuous feasts. Il Monello has stayed true to this heritage of exquisitely prepared, farm-fresh meat, fish, and vegetables, served with a level of skill and innovation that have kept it at the forefront of fine dining.

Waiters in crisp jackets deliver plates of sliced sopressata; sassy, spicy zucchini and pieces of the Parmesan Reggianito, all gratis.

Il Monello is, by my informal count, the eighth restaurant since 1989 to give 89 Main St. in Peapack a try. But this establishment, which opened in February 2011, looks as if it may have staying power.

The building, which was the home of a local doctor in the early part of the last century, has a quaint quality that helps set the stage for a meal that can vary from traditional to a nice detour off the beaten Italian path.

Portions are large and many of the beautifully decorated plates include extras. A grouper oreganata special, for instance, came with two large shrimp but also featured quartered roasted potatoes and a tumble of zucchini and carrot threads. Vitello Fantasia put tender veal together with shrimp, spinach and sun-dried tomatoes in a cheery riff on surf and turf that included pesto mashed potatoes.

Pasta is not forgotten, with a number of good options in this category. An outstanding example was the plate of plump ravioli stuffed with wild mushrooms and Fontina cheese, covered with a blizzard of grated cheese that melted gracefully into a tomato/sage sauce.

Desserts deliver a bonus: a generous garnish of housemade "schlag," fresh whipped cream paired with zabaglione. Choices include a light, lemony cheesecake (good after a big meal) or, for more ambitious appetites, chocolate mousse cake and tiramisu.

The man behind the restaurant is Martino Malsori, born in Montenegro and trained in Italy before arriving in the United States and getting involved with several restaurants in New York and New Jersey. He comes in early to make all the sauces, then supervises the kitchen staff and waiters when the restaurant opens, stopping by tables and making his presence known throughout the building.

Everything is convenient in this location. There is free parking behind the restaurant, and just a short trip down the sidewalk is a wine store where you can pick up a bottle if you haven’t brought one. Bottles are opened efficiently, with the server returning throughout the meal to refresh your glass.
